Sophia Satchell-Baeza

Sophia Satchell-Baeza writes on films, psychedelic art, and the 1960s British counterculture (among other things). Her writing has appeared in Sight & Sound, i-D magazine, Wonderland, Another Man, Sleek, Another Gaze: A Feminist Film Journal, and in the edited collection, Sixties British Cinema Reconsidered (Edinburgh University Press, 2020).

Sophia has programmed numerous events relating to the psychedelia and countercultures. Some of these include Projecting Psychedelia at Regent Street Cinema, which screened the films of Anthony Stern and Kevin Whitney, with a live set by CuT, and a Women of the Counterculture event at Regent Street cinema, in collaboration with Dr. Alissa Clarke.

Working with Bardo Light Show, visionary artist Courtenay Pollock, and sound artist SonicSoul, Sophia presented an immersive lecture performance on light shows and synaesthesia at Guest Projects in 2018. She recently screened a program on visionary women filmmakers (Betzy Bromberg, Storm De Hirsch, and Amy Halpern) at Tyneside Cinema, as part of Sisters of the Extreme, an occasional project with Kathryn Siegel. Sophia’s PhD at King’s College London looked at British psychedelic films and light shows of the Long 1960s.
