Craig Finn
All These Perfect Crosses
(Partisan Records)
2xLP June 20th

We've been big fans of Craig Finn for an age, since I think, Alex V Cook drew our attention to him and his band The Hold Steady, way back. He's a great songwriter for sure and at the volume I am only allowed alone in the car, omg, The Hold Steady actual are physical graffiti in my ears.

The Hold Steady are still holding steady, still going strongly - last years great lp Thrashing Through The Passion, is evidence of that. Over the past few years though, Craig has branched out, he's currently involved in a TV project for AMC, but he also, over the years, issued a trio of critically acclaimed solo lps, Faith In The Future (2015), We All Want The Same Things (2017) and I Need A New War (2019).

For record store day, June 20th, which we've already written about and are more concerned about than ever this year... Craig, producer Josh Kaufman and Partisan Records have put together All These Perfect Crosses, a double lp of b-sides, alternative versions and demo tracks recorded as he put his solo records together.

It's fascinating really to see where The Hold Steady ends and Craig Finn begins. The characters that populate his songs, are often like younger, more middle class Willy Vlautin people, you might recognize them around your neighbourhood, they might actually be you.

The recordings here, help to further tell parts of the stories from those three albums. It is a look behind the curtain, and into the world of one of our most revered songwriters and storytellers at meaningful work today.

Perfect Crosses

HELP OUTSIDELEFT

Outsideleft exists on a precarious no budget budget. We are interested in hearing from deep and deeper pocket types willing to underwrite our cultural vulture activity. We're not so interested in plastering your product all over our stories, but something more subtle and dignified for all parties concerned. Contact us and let's talk. [HELP OUTSIDELEFT]

WRITE FOR OUTSIDELEFT

If Outsideleft had arms they would always be wide open and welcoming to new writers and new ideas. If you've got something to say, something a small dank corner of the world needs to know about, a poem to publish, a book review, a short story, if you love music or the arts or anything else, write something about it and send it along. Of course we don't have anything as conformist as a budget here. But we'd love to see what you can do. Write for Outsideleft, do. [SUBMISSIONS FORM HERE]
