Brittany Bindrim
Sea Storms Maestros
(Metropolis)
The breathtaking Sea Storms Maestros EP faithfully remixes six of the stunning tracks from darkwave, darkpop star, Brittany Bindrim’s album ‘Velella Velella’. The siren beckons among the turbulent storms of the sea, harrowing with synthesisers and industrial drumbeats.
The EP opens with Atlas (Matt McJunkins Remix). The rapid beating of the drums illustrates a restless heart, carrying the burden of expectations; losing one’s way. The wistful vocals lull you along the unstable sea. The attacking tendrils of the synthy trill throughout the song; bursting into a shrouding, intensity towards the end of the song, epitomising the overwhelming emotions of life, battling through the challenges.
The Stabwalt remix of Cast builds on the riveting synths of the original with immense drama. Diving into the daunting depths of the sea with perilous synths, delving into the ethereal unknown, wrestling with the journey of discovery. Hypnotic racing synths, in the middle of song, build up to epic thundering riffs of guitars.
Volcano (_the boundless Remix_) struck me with the grinding chords and the bleeding trills of synth, evoking an intense wrestle, perhaps within oneself. Intense emotions and experiences are expressed through the imagery of a volcano. The drums and sustained strings evoke ominous ritualistic vibe. There's a hopeful remedy to be found in the synths and then the isolation of the drums one the Cyanotic Remix of One Fixed Point. The dynamics create a sense of someone embarking a journey of consciousness. The running synths and the steady drum, this song seemed to elude a searching, a drowning in desperation in the search for answers. The psychedelic guitars create a dream-like, otherworldly atmosphere. The song ends with tender vocals portraying an awakening hope.
The Greg Panciera remix of Obelisk begins with a slow drumbeat, a falling sensation; strength failing. The droning dark refrain of the synth, the stark melodies of the guitar, plunges you into the ether of loss and hopelessness the character is facing, as things are destabilising. The roaring synths and the airy guitars speak of an impending demise or perhaps a solemn solace. The final track is my personal favourite.Currents —Daniel Myer Remix offers haunting, beckoning vocals, the deep muted synths are like a slow lapping of waves. The gloom of the reverberated piano paints a bleak winter, and navigating through the change. This song evokes a sense trying to stay afloat amongst the currents of life, gradually washing over… A worthy reworking of the original LP released back in the spring.
