I’ve sat in the bath for an hour
staring at steam
watching it dance
talking to it sometimes
then listening to what it has to say.
the kids are gone,
and the house
stinks of being empty.
fungal growths, impotence, and death
snigger in corners.
I could hunt them down
and take them on -
but no.
and though the cold is electric against my skin,
and from outside I hear a starling
do an impression of a police siren
I push away
worries of being fat and unloved
and sit staring at nothing.
